Mistra Future Fashion – call for proposals

Mistra invites Swedish researchers, companies and organisations to submit proposals for an interdisciplinary research programme concerning sustainable fashion - clothing, shoes and textile accessories.

The aim is to contribute to systemic change towards a sustainable society, find novel ways of substantially reducing fashion’s environmental impact and strengthen Sweden’s future competitiveness. Mistra will invest SEK 40 million in this new research area which should involve both natural and social science.

Mistra has identified a need for environmental strategic research in the fashion sector. Fashion is a global industry and the consumption of fashion is increasing rapidly.

The total sale of fashion only in Sweden was about SEK 77 million in 2009. Fashion has a significant environmental impact on climate change and water. The massive and increasing clothing and textile volumes in society have become an environmental burden especially since very little of the used items are reused or fibre recycled. The fashion industry and particularly the Swedish based fashion companies have a huge potential to contribute to systemic change towards a more sustainable society.

Advanced research capacity and a common research platform are needed to strengthen the Swedish-based fashion industry’s competitiveness in the area of sustainable fashion. Mistra wishes to invest in a research area that could gather best current knowledge and practice with the aim of building Swedish research capacity in this area. International collaboration is essential. Mistra identifies the following research areas which should be included in a proposal:

  • Changing markets and business models
  • Design processes and innovative materials
  • Sustainable consumption and consumer behavior
  • Policy instruments – from government to governance
Welcome to submit programme proposals to Mistra not later than 15 January 2011!

Remember that...
It takes time — much more than most people think — to formulate a programme proposal that crosses boundaries, both those between disciplines and those between research and application. Make time and provide venues for meetings, and invest in team spirit.

It takes careful thought to ensure that the programme meets both the researchers’ career development needs and the users’ need for valuable practical benefits.

Interdisciplinary research often takes longer than research in a single discipline. Make sure you allow enough time.

The work involved in a Mistra programme often requires experienced researchers with both in-depth and wide-ranging knowledge. The programme therefore needs a balance between senior scientists and PhD students.

Avoid involving many small-scale, part-time researchers in the programme. This makes it more difficult to attain common aims in the programme.

The programme manager is a key person in the programme’s efforts to make its planned contribution. Being a Mistra programme manager is, as a rule, a full-time job. Think carefully about who is best suited for the challenging task of leading your team.

Strive to ensure two-way communication between the researchers and users. A one-sided presentation of ideas and research findings by the scientists seldom generates a feeling of participation and commitment in the intended users.
