Rajni Hatti-Kaul of Greenchem Receives Award
On February 5, Rajni Hatti-Kaul receives SKR’s (The Swedish Society of Chemical Engeneers) 2010 prize for Chemical Engineering prize. She is being honored for her efforts in “green chemistry.”

Greenchem program director Rajni Hatti-Kaul, biotechnology professor at Lund Institute of Technology, will travel to Stockholm in early February to be part of the Swedish Chemical Engineers National Society’s Berzelius Days in Aula Magna at Stockholm’s University. That's when talented high school chemists from Sweden, Norway and Denmark face the chemistry industry and receive their "Berzelius Scholarships.” Rajni Hatti-Kaul, is this year's recipient of the chemical engineering prize—a silver bar weighing a half kilo (one lbs.). The award is an acknowledgement of the success of the Greenchem research program, which after several years of experimentation has focused on three areas: coatings, surfactants and lubricants.
The objective of green chemistry is to produce chemicals from renewable raw materials and making processes more environmentally friendly. The challenge is to use the same powerful enzymes that act as catalysts in nature. Microorganisms that live in very extreme environments are particularly suitable producing stable enzymes that industrial and manufacturing applications.
Rajni Hatti-Kaul, imagines a future where biotechnology processes in combination with chemical processes are used in an environmentally sound way.
Rajni Hatti-Kaul was born in Bombay, India, and came to Sweden after earning a Ph.D in Biochemestry.
